Blog #2 Marley Clendenin

Paragraph 1:

The person I believe is lacking the most morals is Eve. Throughout the whole play she does unethical things to toy around with Adam. What I believe makes a person unethical and evil is if they are doing acts of harm to others or lying to hurt someone, not help. Influencing someone to the point where it's effecting their life in a negative way is morally wrong.

Paragraph 2:

My belief is that the way Eve persuades Adam to change his whole look and even his personality is morally wrong and pretty much evil. I do not think that Eve telling Adam to workout and grow out his hair was not pushing it because Adam was not harming himself. Working out actually helps him physically get in shape and stay healthy, but then you read later on about Adam getting a nose job. That's harmful to his health and was an unnecessary sugary. That is when you start to question how evil Eve really is and think she is the most unethical out of the characters.

Paragraph 3:

If you look at it on the other hand Adam could be considered the most unethical because of how much he changed to make a girl happy. He was willing to go under anesthesia and get his nose done to please a girl. He also made a sex tape because Eve wanted to. He had only had sex with three girls in his life and was willing to give it up so easily for her. Is that love? Having to change yourself completely to please your partner. He also let her change him, that's so unethical to let someone redesign you. so maybe he is the most morally wrong instead of Eve because he let her do everything she did.

Paragraph 4:

Now it comes down to who is the most morally wrong. The person doing evil things or the person letting someone do evil things and not trying to stop it. I would say Eve is still the most unethical because of how evil her intentions are. There is no guilt for playing with Adams feelings and health. She really does not care what she does to other people as long as she gets what she wants in the end. She made Adam fall in love with her and then ruined him in a matter of time. She truly in the most unethical person in this play.

  1. Doesn't Eve "mess with" Adam's health in a positive way? Is it still evil if he benefits?

  2. What if Eve's intention wasn't to play with Adam's feeling in the first place until she figured out Adam cheated on her?

  3. If she never forced Adam to do anything then how did she really influence him? She continuously told him he didn't have to do something but he still went through with it.

  4. even though Eve influenced changes on Adam for personal gain, Adam himself likes the change too because it made him feel more confident so could it be the Eve isn't that bad if Adam also benefited from what Eve did too.

  5. Yes I see that Eve is wrong but the things Adam did were on his part. He picked which thing to lie about and which thing not to lie about. I see what you are saying and I get your point.

  6. The TV manipulates us all the time. Peers manipulate us all the time ("peer pressure"). I shiny object can distract us. Are those things evil? Isn't Eve just a shiny object to Adam? In exchange for pleasure, he does whatever she says. He doesn't bother to get to know her--if he'd actually asked real questions and asked to meet her parents, etc., the game would have been up.

The irony in all of this is Eve didn't try to get Adam to do drugs or rob a bank or quit school. She altered him to fit society's idea of beauty. The "damage" she did wasn't damage at all, unless you count the hurt feelings. But all relationships involve hurt feelings at some point.

But it is troubling that Eve could be so detached from hurting Adam so badly because she wanted to make great art and was uncompromising in trying to make it (not interested in the "Ethic of Caring").

Any way, I hope we can agree Labute's play is great art--it is uncomfortable, makes us think, and brings to light something that beneath the surface. I think the strong female character is an added bonus. I suspect if Eve was a guy and Adam was a girl, we'd take less issue with the manipulation that went on.

  7. I believe that even though Adam is his own person and can make his own choices, but manipulation by a person can be easily overlooked if they are someone you consider some what significant. We believe that when someone tells us we have something on our face we can trust them because they tell you for your own good. We believe that when they tell us straight up they only have our best interest at heart. This making it easy for Eve to 'influence' many of Adams decisions.
