Reading the play was really interesting as I go more into the end I really had different thought about Eve is really confident about herself. Adam is really lack of morals and not self confident.

In the beginning of the play I thought that Adam would be a person that is confident about himself. He has lack of morals he always has second thoughts about what he says to Eve and always thinks that she's right and his not. Adam thinks his not perfect enough for who he is. He does not show the real him to Eve he just wants to follow what she wants him to do and what she thins about him.

Eve on the other hand is really self confident. She is very confident about what she says and thinks about herself. She does not have lack of morals. She does not expect anything from Adam that would make her think less confident about fir who she is. She stays the way she is from the beginning till the end of the play the same way.

I personally think that Eve was not forcing or telling Adam what to do she was just giving suggestions so Adam should not take everything serious and be someone that she wants him to be. He should have self confidence and morals. He should know that his worth of something and not follow everything that comes out Eve mouth and he should go his way.

  1. I definitely agree with what you're saying. Adam's lack of self confident has caused him to think of Eve in a superior manner. Thus leaving him weak to her every wish.

  2. From my perspective Eve is the most moral lacking character in the play. She was the one who pushes Adam to change.

  3. I think that Adam's insecurity made him vulnerable to any type of influence that is thrown at him from anyone. If he was more comfortable with himself, he wouldn't have let Eve manipulate him in the first place. Nice post!

  4. I agree with you completely. I believe the fact that he allowed himself to be manipulated means he lacks the most morals.

  6. that is a great point to make and completely fits with who Adam is as a character. Many people who have insecurities get hurt the most at the end because like you said they dont know their self worth

  7. I like how you were able to step back from your initial reaction and look at the situation. I still wonder what you think about Eve's manipulation, though. Is she taking advantage of his lack of confidence? In the end, is Adam even less confident now?

But it is troubling that Eve could be so detached from hurting Adam so badly because she wanted to make great art and was uncompromising in trying to make it. Part of me respects that, and part of me is worried by that.

Any way, I hope we can agree Labute's play is great art--it is uncomfortable, makes us think, and brings to light something that beneath the surface. I think the strong female character is an added bonus. I suspect if Eve was a guy and Adam was a girl, we'd take less issue with the manipulation that went on.
