Response To Blog Post #2

The person that is most lacking in morals in the play is the one who allows their actions to be altered by others telling them what to do. I say this because every where many people try to influence our actions all of the time: our parents, TV commercials, your teachers, etc. but it is up to the person to either do or don't do what they are being told. People aren't evil when they try to influence your actions, if that was the case most of the world would be evil.

Therefore speaking I think that Adam is lacking morals throughout the play. He continuously allows Evelyn to influence his actions or true self. In the play Adam is influenced by Evelyn on many occasions. For example, working out more, getting a new hairstyle and nose job. All of these are examples of Adam losing his true self just by listening to Evelyn. His friends even begin to notice the change when hey notice the new jacket he had gotten and they blame Evelyn for it, but Adam continuously lies and makes excuses for the changes he made.

On the other hand people may try to blame Evelyn because she lied and purposely tried to influence Adam for her own personal gain. Adam began to change a lot because he thought it would make Evelyn happy, but little did he know she was just using him. At the end of the play Evelyn admits that she was never really in the relationship because she had feelings for Adam, she was using him for her assignment. This is morally messed up because you can't go around playing with peoples feelings. You should let your intentions be said from the jump and problems like this one wouldn't have happened.

Overall I think Adam is lacking the most morally. By him letting others influence his decisions he ended up destroying himself. He lost friends. relationship and things that were dear at heart to him. People should always question whether not something is really for the good of them and if that person or they were not influenced would they still do that thing they are being told to do. How will this decision impact you  ?

  1. I really like what you were saying about Adam, and my post was similar, that I think Adam is lacking morals, but I don't think he lacks more then Eve. I believe in the end that they both are missing their morals and are very unethical. When you look though deep into the play Adam never did as many harmful things to others, he was just hurting himself. Eve on the other hand was hurting everyone around her, but wasn't hurting herself. So she is most lacking morals.

  2. I think it's interesting that you place "losing himself" as more morally lacking than messing with people's feelings. I think most people would argue that losing himself isn't necessarily morally lacking, it's just a personal flaw.

  3. I agree completely with you that Adam is lacking. He lets others easily influence him and he made bad decisions based off all of the influences that Evelyn did. Adam definitely lacked morally.

  4. I don't agree that Adam was lacking the MOST morals, but I totally see your point, and it makes a lot of sense to me too. I think the worst thing he did was cut off his friends, the only genuine people he had.

  5. I definitely agree with what you are saying. It seems as though everyone wants to blame Eve,even though it is Adam who gave her the power to control him.

  6. I totally agree with your opinion, Adam wasn't forced to do the things he did. He chose to do it, he picked which things to lie about and which things not to lie about. I can clearly see your view and your reasons are very strong.

  7. This is a pretty balanced look at the situation. Well done. But, I don't know that it's accurate to say Eve did it for personal gain. She's pretty clear she wanted to make a true piece of art, not necessarily something she could sell or be famous for. She doesn't seem to have actual friends, and it's not even clear if she's going to get a passing grade because of what she did.

Any way, I hope we can agree Labute's play is great art--it is uncomfortable, makes us think, and brings to light something that beneath the surface. I think the strong female character is an added bonus. I suspect if Eve was a guy and Adam was a girl, we'd take less issue with the manipulation that went on.
